Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Pastry brush
  • Sharp knife
  • Saucepan
  • Whisk or electric mixer

Ingredients

  • 1 pound phyllo dough
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 2 cups chopped nuts (almonds, pistachios, or walnuts)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F) and mix chopped nuts with a teaspoon of cinnamon.
  • Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with melted butter.
  • Layer 10 sheets of phyllo in the dish, brushing each with melted butter, keeping unused phyllo covered.
  • Sprinkle a generous amount of nut mixture evenly over the top.
  • Repeat with 5 more buttered sheets, another layer of nuts, finishing with 10 final buttered sheets on top.
  • Cut into squares or diamond shapes, then bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
  • Heat the milk in a saucepan. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and flour until smooth.
  • Slowly pour warm milk into egg mixture, whisking constantly. Cook over low heat until thickened, then stir in vanilla.
  • In another saucepan, combine honey, water, and sugar. Boil, then simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Drizzle hot syrup over warm baklava and let it rest for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  • Serve with a dollop of chilled custard on the side.

Notes

Feel free to customize the nuts based on your preference. For a dairy-free option, use almond, oat, or coconut milk. The resting period is crucial for texture—don't skip it! To revive crispiness after storage, briefly reheat in the oven. Serve on a decorative platter for an impressive presentation, garnished with fresh mint or edible flowers.
