Equipment

  • Round cake pan
  • Offset spatula
  • Piping bag with tips
  • Rolling pin for fondant
  • Other equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 box cake mix (chocolate or vanilla)
  • 3 cups buttercream frosting
  • q.s. green food coloring gel
  • 1 package white fondant or extra frosting for laces
  • 1 marker black edible marker for details
  • optional pretzel sticks for goalposts

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven according to the instructions on the cake mix box and grease your round cake pan.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the pan and bake until golden brown.
  • Let the cake cool completely before handling and gently trim the edges to make them slightly oval.
  • Divide the buttercream into two bowls; tint one batch green for the field and leave the other white for accents.
  • Frost the cake with green buttercream, smoothing it out and creating texture resembling grass with a spatula.
  • Roll out the white fondant and cut thin strips for the laces, placing them down the middle of the cake.
  • Use a black edible marker or cocoa powder for shading and add piped white frosting for yard lines, if desired.
  • Chill the cake for 15 minutes before serving to set the decorations.

Notes

If preferred, use homemade cake batter instead of boxed mix for a richer flavor. Swap buttercream for cream cheese frosting for a tangier note. Practice piping techniques on parchment paper before applying them to the cake. Store the cake in an airtight container and refrigerate if necessary. Leftovers freeze well, just wrap slices and store. Consider sprinkling crushed Oreos around the base to mimic dirt for a unique touch!
