Equipment

  • Cake pans
  • Electric mixer
  • Spatula or offset knife
  • Piping bags and tips (optional)
  • Food coloring (gel recommended)

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix or your favorite homemade recipe
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups green-tinted buttercream frosting
  • 1 small tube white icing for details
  • 1 edible golf ball decorations available online or at craft stores
  • Optional: golf cake toppers or fondant flags

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease your cake pans.
  • Mix the cake batter according to package instructions or your favorite recipe.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake.
  • Let the cakes cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Stack the layers with a thin spread of frosting between each one.
  • Frost the cake with green-tinted buttercream to create a grassy texture.
  • Add details like sand traps with crushed graham crackers and place edible golf balls.
  • Chill the frosted cake for 15 minutes before adding final touches.

Notes

Feel free to swap the yellow cake mix for chocolate or vanilla sponge if preferred! For a different texture, use coconut flakes dyed green instead of frosting. Store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days, or refrigerate if in a humid area. For longer storage, freeze the unfrosted cake layers, wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Thaw in the fridge when you’re ready to frost. Use a lazy Susan turntable for smoother frosting, and practice piping techniques on parchment paper before applying them to the actual cake!
