Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Baking spatula
  • Two round cake pans
  • Serrated knife or pizza cutter

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup cocoa powder for chocolate cake

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour two round cake pans.
  • In a bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
  • In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and cocoa powder (if making chocolate cake).
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until smooth.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn onto wire racks to cool completely.
  • Once cooled, level the tops of the cakes if necessary.
  • Place the cakes side by side and slice them in half vertically to form four half-circle shapes.
  • Assemble the heart shape by attaching two halves at the flat edges for the top curves and two halves for the bottom point.
  • Trim any uneven edges for a smoother finish.
  • Decorate the assembled cake with buttercream frosting and fresh fruits as desired.

Notes

For a fun twist, try adding flavored extracts or swapping ingredients, like using dark chocolate for a richer flavor. Keep any leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If using fondant, it can last even longer. Don't hesitate to get creative with your decorations! A simple ganache drizzling or crushed nuts can elevate the look of your cake. If you're in a hurry, using a boxed cake mix can save time and effort while still yielding delicious results!
