Equipment

  • Electric mixer
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Cake pan (9-inch round or square)
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk

Instructions

  • Cream the softened butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then pour in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  • Pour the batter into a greased cake pan and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Notes

For extra moisture and flavor, brush the cooled cake with a simple syrup made from equal parts sugar and water.
Store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or refrigerate if in a humid area.
Consider using almond or coconut milk for a dairy-free version or swapping granulated sugar with coconut sugar for a deeper flavor.
Don’t skip the room temperature step for the butter and eggs to achieve the best texture in your cake!
