Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cup
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Wire rack

Ingredients

  • 500 g flour
  • 100 g sugar
  • 250 ml warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 50 g melted butter
  • 15 g baker's yeast
  • 2 tbsp orange blossom water
  • a pinch salt
  • to taste powdered sugar for decoration

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and a pinch of salt; whisk until well mixed.
  • In a separate bowl, dissolve the baker's yeast in the warm milk and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add the eggs and melted butter to the yeast mixture, then stir in the orange blossom water until smooth.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix until you have a shaggy, sticky dough.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl; cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for about 1 hour.
  • Punch down the risen dough and transfer it to a floured surface; gently shape it into a large, flat oval and make artistic cuts on the surface.
  • Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let it rest for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and bake the fougasse for 25 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Let the fougasse cool on a wire rack and dust it with powdered sugar before serving warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of orange zest to the dough. If you cannot find orange blossom water, vanilla extract or rose water are suitable alternatives. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with tea or coffee for a delightful experience.
