Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Piping bags and tips
  • Round cake pans
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups buttercream frosting
  • q.s. Food coloring (red, blue, yellow)
  • q.s. Sesame street cake toppers or edible prints

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two round cake pans and line them with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk until the batter is smooth.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely before frosting.
  • Spread a layer of buttercream between the cakes and stack them. Cover the entire cake with frosting. Mix food coloring into the remaining frosting to match favorite characters, and use piping bags to add details.
  • Finish with sesame street cake toppers for extra flair.

Notes

Use almond or soy milk for a dairy-free version. Swap buttercream with cream cheese frosting for a tangy twist. Ensure cakes are cooled completely before frosting to prevent slippage. For better cutting of the cake, let it cool in the freezer for 10 minutes before frosting. Store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days or refrigerate if heavily decorated.
