Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Baking dish
  • Pastry brush
  • Saucepan

Ingredients

  • 16 oz phyllo dough
  • 2 cups finely chopped walnuts or pistachios
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  • To start, mix the finely chopped nuts with cinnamon in a bowl. Toast the nuts lightly before chopping them to enhance their natural oils and flavors.
  • Brush a baking dish with melted butter and begin layering the phyllo sheets. Brush each sheet with butter to ensure crispiness. Sprinkle the nut mixture evenly after laying half the sheets, then continue with the remaining sheets.
  • Before baking, cut the layered baklava into diamond shapes for even slicing later. Bake until golden brown.
  • While the baklava bakes, prepare the syrup by combining water, sugar, honey, and lemon juice. Simmer until it thickens slightly.
  • Once the baklava comes out of the oven, pour the hot syrup over it. Let it rest to absorb the syrup fully.

Notes

Preparing baklava might seem challenging, but with patience, each layer will reward you with authentic flavors and unforgettable richness. Enjoy baking!
