Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Clean, oiled bowl for rising
  • Damp cloth
  • Lined baking tray
  • Oven mitts

Ingredients

  • 50 ml olive oil
  • 10 g sugar
  • 300 ml lukewarm water
  • 10 g active dry yeast
  • 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 10 g salt

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, mix the lukewarm water and yeast, then let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and sugar.
  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil; mix until a rough dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a clean, oiled bowl and cover with a damp cloth; let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the risen dough, divide it into small equal portions, and shape each into a smooth ball.
  • Place the shaped rolls on a lined baking tray, cover with a cloth, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F) and bake the rolls for about 15-20 minutes, until golden brown.

Notes

You can substitute all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a healthier version. If you're out of sugar, honey can be used instead; just adjust the liquid slightly. For added flavor, consider mixing in herbs or spices as desired. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
